Little is known of Maitrii and its inhabitants, save for what remains in the notebooks and recordings of anthropologist Dr August Maynard, found partially intact by villagers on the shores of Easter Island. Though described in Maynard’s notebooks as being an island approximately the size of Malta, later anthropologists have theorised that the Maitrii Maynard discovered may in fact have been the last remnant of the sunken continent Aninomola, believed to have perished by flooding some five millennia prior to the birth of the first known civilizations of Mesopotamia. Whatever its geographical constitution, it remains to this day true that all subsequent exhibitions in the South Pacific have failed to uncover even a modicum of evidence that such a place as Maitrii ever existed.

Presented here, unabridged and in stereo, are the newly restored audio recordings taken by Maynard of the Maitrii people’s music. Following Maynard’s own notation, the recordings have been organised into the categories Trance and Meditation. “Though the musical play of the Maitrii peoples is almost always communal in practice,” writes Maynard, “involving residents of all ages and creed, certain of the more intense pieces (Trance) tend to be performed by a more exclusive shamanistic group. Trance pieces serve as a means of communication with the dead, or extradimensional non-human life forms, who are said to invoke a kind of gnosis in the entranced subjects. The other, more commonly performed music, Meditation, is typically calmer in effect, serving as a means of healing, contemplation, and rest.”
